Common Crane

Common Cranes used to be abundant in the UK but became extinct some time ago. The Crane project at Slimbridge WWT set about recifying this. They have been very successful and now released birds can be seen regularly on the Somerset levels and at Slimbridge where released birds have bred. The photos show some youngsters. My record is 17 Cranes seen at Slimbridgeat the same time.

If you want to see lots of them go to Lac du Der near Dijon in France, they have tens of thousands wintering there each year.

Here is a video of Cranes doing their courtship dance.
